GOVERNMENT OF THE WAWARSING ROD AND GUN CLUB, INC.
A.K.A. WAWARSING SPORTSMEN'S CLUB
The Wawarsing Rod and Gun Club is a not for profit corporation registered by
the State of New York. We are dedicated to the conservation of our natural
resources, protection of our rights under the second amendment and guardian
of our natural resources be it in the field, stream or shooting range. We
promote good fellowship, sportsmanship and a meeting place for those of
similar persuasion.
We are governed by a leadership consisting of a president, 1st and 2nd vice
presidents, treasurer, recording secretary, membership secretary, newsletter
editor, immediate past president and a board of six trustees; 2 elected for a 3 year term and 4 elected for a two year term.
Membership is open to the general public regardless of age, gender, race or
color. In addition, special membership provisions have been extended to
include youth from the age of eleven to eighteen. Life memberships are also
presented.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month with the exception of
July and August. Meetings are preceded by a full dinner at 6:30 p.m.
prepared and served by various members. A Board of Directors meeting is held
on the first Tuesday of each month. In addition to the regular standing
committees governing the function of the. club such as buildings and
grounds, legislation, kitchen, reservations, fish and game, Ulster County
Federation, special division committees have also been established. Working
as independent units but under the total supervision of the parent club we
at present have a trapshooting division, skeet division, Junior shooting
division, hunter training division, and a camping trailer division known as
the Shongum Shockers. A very smooth and harmonious relationship exists
between all committees and divisions. In addition the club also has a rifle
range director.
For the past thirty-five years our members have been mailed a monthly
newsletter which includes club news, calendar of events, proposals, minutes
of the previous meeting and on occasion personal items and comments about
various members which are always written and taken in good humor. The BOD,
the newsletters, the various divisions, the meals, and the good fellowship
without rank or rancor has been the cement that binds us tight.
Throughout the year we support many club projects such as the annual youth
fishing contest open to the general public, an annual.field day, dinners
honoring daughters, sons, and mates, a July 4th float, sighting in day for
the general public the day before deer season and special work days just to
mention a few.
On the political scene we are members of the Ulster County Federation of
Sportsmen's Clubs, the NRA, NYSRPA, provide NRA magazines subscriptions to
two local high school libraries and contribute to the Friends of the NRA.
Since our inception our records show an active pursuit for the right to
hunt, fish, trap on public lands with increasing activity shown during the
past five years as the Minnewaska and Shawangunk ridges take center stage.
Even more recently one of our members has been appointed as one of two
representatives to the Sportsmen's Advisory Council to the New York City
Watershed Commission, responsible for reviewing thee determining future use
of lands purchased by NYC in their quest to maintain water quality in its
watershed district
We have hosted senators and assemblymen, Commissioners and other people in
high office in order to acquaint them with our position on a variety of
sportsmen's subjects.
As a sign of our progressive nature, the WR&G Club has recently completed an
extensive land survey of our property. Within the months to follow a master
plan will be formulated in order to expand our facilities to its greatest
potential. One of our primary objectives is a boat launching ramp that will
access Honk Lake.
